Penny Lee Dean's book is the definative reference for this rapidly growing movement in competitive swimming. You can almost see her writing chapter titles and outlines with a magic marker on a board, with a group of swimmers taking notes. The book is as clear as water, and about as interesting. If you really want to swim long open-water swims, like the English Channel or across some big lake, this is clearly the book for you. She has excellent training tips, instructions for dealing with obstacles and injuries, and motivational ideas.

Wind, Waves, and Sunburn; A Brief History of Marathon Swimmers by Conrad Wennerberg  - This book takes you through the illustrious history of open water swimming and the challenges encountered by great athletes like Matthew Webb, Greta Anderson and Abdel-Latif Abo-Heif. This should be in the library of every swimmer and coach regardless of whether or not you ever plan to venture into open water swimming. Originally this book was released in 1974 but this edition was released in 1997 and has some updated material. But it's the old photos and stories that make this book important.

Lucky's Collectors Guide to 20th Century Yo-Yos : History & Values by Lucky Meisenheimer  - If you know Lucky Meisenheimer, you know he's a world class masters competitor swimming for Team Orlando Masters. But you may not be aware that he is one of the world's foremost authorities on yo-yo's. This was released in October, 1999 and is considered the definative text on the subject.
