Swimming Everest - by Terry Tomalin of the St. Petersburg Times - The 21-mile crossing of the English Channel is the open-water peak for challengers such as Ron Collins. They call it the Everest of open-water swimming. "It doesn't matter how many times you have swum around Manhattan or across Tampa Bay," Collins said a few days before he would attempt to add his name to the record book. "When it comes to long-distance swims, there is only one that matters and that is the English Channel." MORE>>>

All 16 solo swimmers and 3 relay teams were forced to withdraw due to inclement weather at the 15th Annual event on April 21, 2012

Sarah Thomas of Englewood, Colorado maintained a lead throughout the race, and was the leader of the pack when inclement weather forced an early end to the race. After swimming in Tampa Bay, battling wind and waves for 6 hours, 25 minutes, approaching lightning ended the event before any of the swimmers were able to reach the finish line.

Swim Across America - Tampa Bay - May 5, 2012

The first ever Swim Across America Tampa Bay will be on May 5th at Clearwater Beach next to Pier 60. It will be a 1-mile and 1/2-mile swim (not a race) to raise money for specific cancer research at Moffitt Cancer Center. This is a great opportunity for kayakers and swimmers to give back to the community. Since it is not a race, teams can and do include non-competitors. It would be their chance to challenge themselves, help support a wonderful cause or help honor someone.

If you are able to volunteer as a support kayaker, or as a swimmer, please sign up at:

With an emphasis on an even playing field for both swimmers and runners, the AQUATERRA Formula is a 1:4 ratio Swim to Run. The world record in the short course 1500 meter freestyle (swim) is 14:10. The world record in the indoor 1500 meter run is3:31. At their fastest, the runner would cover four times the distance of the swimmer in the same amount of time. By applying the AquaTerra Formula, the two Official AquaTerra Distances are the following: AT5K: Swim 1K/Run 4K; AT10K: Swim 2K/Run 8K. Our next event will be in October, 2012, and entry forms will be available on August 1st.
