How do people know that your web site is online and how do they find it? The best answer is through the use of Search Engines.
Most search engines use a relevancy rating or keyword density rating to help determine your page ranking for a
given search term. We will determine the primary keywords/phrases for which you would like to have
a top ranking in the search engines. There should be less than 20 keywords for each page.
The relevancy rating is based on the percentage of a given
keyword/phrase usage to the total number of words on a page. The relevancy for
each individual keyword will diminish as the number of keywords in your meta tag increases.
We recommend phrases as opposed than single words that have little meaning on their own.
Phrases, more often than not, rule out the need to use single words. But when the text of the page is peppered with this
entire phrase a few times, not only will each individual word have greater relevancy, so will the complete phrase.
Likewise, using the longest version of a word will more often than not be relevant for the shorter version of a word
too, as long as the full spelling of the shorter word is included in the longer version.
Some search engines will go one Distance further and consider synonyms for their search results.
Put your most important keywords or phases first in the meta tags and in the copy. Search engines have different
specifications for how many characters they'll read in each section of your page, so having your most important
keywords first ensures they will be indexed by the search engine.
When listing your keywords/phrases, consider using variations in capitalization for your most important keywords.
While studies show most people type search words in lower case, there are still those people who insist on typing
in all caps. Some search engines give different results for capitalization. Also, don't repeat the same word or
phrase back to back, and only use a single keyword or phrase up to three times in a single tag.
You may also consider using popular variations on a word or common misspellings.
Keep these misspellings confined to your meta tags so they won't be visible to your readers.
These should also be listed at the end of your keyword tag because they are less important.
DON'T use any keywords/phrases that don't appear somewhere in the text of the page. I
Search engines now penalize companies that use this tactic with lower rankings or complete omission from the
index.
The title is probably the most important of all meta tags. It is the text that will make the first
impression of your company to potential visitors in the search engines. The title should be 12 words
or less and should contain nothing but keywords if possible . . . the most important keywords. But it
must make some logical sense, rather than simply being a list of keywords. Avoid using filler words
as much as possible in your title.
The title is also what is used in browsers when someone bookmarks your site . . . so make it descriptive or
people may forget who you are and remove you from their favorites. In many cases, a company name is not sufficient
for the title of your page.
